Preventive Care

Early Detection Dentistry is expensive and no one likes a toothache, so utilizing preventive dental services and treating cavities early saves you money and pain. Keep in mind that the absence of pain does not equal tooth health and the presence of pain can be avoided with early detection, treatment, and preventive services. Floss for Heart Health Periodontal Disease is directly connected to heart disease and diabetes. Flossing not only prevents cavities, it can also prevent serious preventable diseases. Keep in mind, plaque on your teeth correlates to plaque in your heart. |
Dental Cleanings Regular cleanings are important to maintaining long term oral health. We utilize modern techniques and offer ultrasonic cleanings that allow the teeth to be thoroughly flushed of bacteria associated with gingivitis and periodontal disease. A routine cleaning or prophy can only be performed in absence of periodontal disease. More extensive “cleanings” to treat periodontal disease are also known as scaling and root planing and treatment will be tailored to a patient’s specific needs and diagnosis Sealants & Preventive Resin Restorations (PRR’s) Sealants are a flouridated sealer that is painted into the biting surface grooves of molars and premolars. Sealants are an excellent preventive measure but they are not ideal if the tooth has been erupted longer than 6 months due to cavity causing bacteria already penetrating the grooves resulting in early decay. Sealants do not require anesthetic and may need to be replaced every 3 to 5 years. PRR’s are similar to sealants but involve the use of “sand blasting” and or “mini-drill” techniques to remove stain and early enamel decay often without the need for anesthestic. The groove is then filled with a fluoridated flowable composite material that is stronger than a sealant. It is a procedure that is minimally invasive and ensures that if there is decay deeper than expected, it is caught and treated at an early stage. |

Dr. Owens uses flowable composite material for Sealants and PRR’s due to it’s superior strength qualities. Although hygienists and dental assistants are often certified to place sealants, Dr. Owens chooses to place all preventive restorations herself. |
