Composite fillings are commonly referred to as resin, bonding, or tooth colored fillings. They are an excellent cosmetic option for conservative fillings or front teeth.  However, a composite restoration is not the ideal long term choice for repairing extensive or deep decay.  Biting forces can crack the bonded seal causing leakage and rapid redecay.  Composite fillings are not affected by teeth whitening so it is recommended that bleaching be considered prior to restoring teeth visible in the smile line.

AMALGAM / ALLOY FILLINGS

Amalgam AKA silver or alloy fillings are still placed b patient request. They are less expensive and prevent recurring decay well, however, these fillings can cause fractures in your teeth over the long run due to the metal’s expansive qualities.

Both filling types are acceptable but should be considered “temporary” because they will need to be replaced and maintained throughout your lifetime.  The size and location of a filling directly relates to it’s longevity.
